Recently, the Aceros Arequipa corporation in coordination with the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima inaugurated the first “Emergency Water” pilot project in the upper part of San Juan de Lurigancho A.H. Santa Rosita I stage, which will allow access to drinking water to more than 12,000 inhabitants or 3,000 families. The implementation of the pumping system and accessories was financed by Aceros Arequipa, who donated equipment worth US $60,000 to the Lima Foundation for it.
This project will contribute to counteract one of the most worrisome problems in Lima, since a million and a half citizens do not have access to drinking water or sewerage. In the case of the young towns and small human settlements settled on the hills and hills, the water supply is carried out through tanker trucks that sell the resource at a high cost, paying up to 10 times more, compared to people who have a home connection.
Faced with this situation, the project will distribute the water from the SEDAPAL RP4-A reservoir, through a pumping system that will take the water to water supply sources (pylons) for human consumption, with pressure control. Likewise, the first stage of the project includes the opening of the first 13 pylons so that the population can capture this resource.
The inauguration activity included the participation of engineer Ricardo Cilloniz Champín, executive president of Aceros Arequipa (CAASA); Ricardo Cilloniz Rey, CAASA Project, Mining and Social Responsibility manager; Rafael López Aliaga, mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima; Jesús Maldonado, mayor of the District Municipality of San Juan de Lurigancho; Ismael Sutta Soto, vice minister of Social Benefits of MIDIS; Isabel Del Rocío Ayala Melgarejo, manager of Social Development; as well as with the leader of the "Santa Rosita I Stage Family Group" and residents of the town.
“For Aceros Arequipa it is crucial that our economic growth go hand in hand with social and environmental development. Communities are one of the main interest groups with which we work. For us, it is important to contribute to the problem that currently exists in Lima due to access to drinking water. With this action we reaffirm our commitment to be able to contribute our grain of sand in this important challenge”, said Eng. Ricardo Cilloniz Champín.
